The Tony Rigoli Performance (TRP) team ran their Mitsubishi Eclipse in the Super Compact class at the X Champs event on the 2nd – 4th of may. The super Compact class is one of the most hotly contested classes in Australian drag racing. The whos who of performance workshops were out to claim bragging rights and take home the win. Nulon 2

In the first round of qualifying on Friday morning Dominic Rigoli from the TRP team qualified 3rd out of 6 cars running a 7.75 ET on a 6.90 index. During this run, and the reason it was slower than normal, was that there was a major engine failure and the engine block casting split along it’s length. The TRP team returned to their workshop and did a full rebuild (including machining) on Friday afternoon in preparation for the following day of qualification. They turned their weekend around and had the car ready to race in 4.5 hours, unbelievable effort.

In the second round of qualifying on Saturday the weather wasn’t ideal and cars in many other classes were spinning tyres and running slow times. Due to the dangerously low level of grip on the track, the second day of qualifying was called off in the early afternoon.

In the first round of eliminations on Sunday morning Dominic Rigoli defeated Rod Harvey (Toyota Celica, 2JZ-GTE) to move on to the next round running a 6.89 ET. The car ran nice and straight with little tyre shake and no engine problems. This meant that the Dominic Rigoli and the TRP team were to proceed to the finals.

In the final on Sunday afternoon Dominic Rigoli was paired up against George Rehayem from PAC performance (Mazda6 SP, 20b turbo rotary) who also won his semi-final elimination. Unfortunately for the PAC performance team they had gearbox problems and couldn’t stage. Dominic Rigoli received the win by default but still ran a solo pass and did the fastest time of the weekend for the TRP team of a 6.85 ET at 317km/h which is the new CCFC national record.

It was clear that the whole TRP racing team were out to prove a point over the weekend. They are one of the busiest drag racing teams we have come across at Nulon, This car will be running 3 times in the next 4 weeks alone, concluding with the Winter Nationals at Willowbank at the start of June.
